I've been on proboards forums quite a lot in the past, and I can say that there's no way that karma should be used as an online jazzhands thing for several reasons-
1) As far as I'm aware, there are limitations on how frequently you can give people karma (or take it away), which makes the whole thing impractical on a technical level from the very beginning. 2) Due to the non-value-neutral terms used ("karma", "exalt", and "smite"), people have even more potential to be hurt by this than they do by disagreeing hands in meetings. 3) The use of karma allows orchestrated campaigns of marginalisation against certain people 4) There's a potential that people will be valued more highly or have their opinion more respected or whatever purely due to the amount of karma they have, which is actually intrinsically connected with things like how long they have been on the forum, and therefore this marginalises newcomers in comparison, etc.
Basically I really strongly think that we should NOT use the karma system, and actually, if it's at all possible, it should be disabled by an administrator.

hey Luke... i'm new to forums, so it's great to have your opinion.
Is there anything else you can tell us that is useful about how proboards work?
I completely agree with you about karma, smite exalt being non-value neutral. GOOD POINT.
I think i was just a bit overexcited about the forum. I'd also add that we aren't on this forum to get consensus because it is impossible over the internet - that should happen in general meetings - we are here to have discussion.

Karma makes you feel like you're 13 again, make of that what you will.

I think i was just a bit overexcited about the forum. I'd also add that we aren't on this forum to get consensus because it is impossible over the internet - that should happen in general meetings - we are here to have discussion. Just posted a beginners guide to proboards tags. That should help people a bit. Would it be possible for you to give me (and Ximin, and anyone else who knows how this forum works quite well) moderator and/or administrator access? That way we should be able to make important threads 'sticky' (which means they're always at the top of the forum page, they don't slide down to the bottom even if no one posts in them - it's useful for FAQs, etc). I agree we're here to discuss, and that's exactly what worries me about the use of the karma facility - it can be used maliciously when there is an ongoing feud or tension or disagreements between two people or groups of people, etc, and even if no one intentionally does this, it can have alienating and marginalising effects in and of itself because newer people will have lower karma, which gives off the impression of their opinion not being valid because fewer people have "jazz handed" them. I think one of the basic problems with karma as a jazz hands facility is that it leaves a semi-permanent trace of past jazz-handing, which is counter-productive, intimidating, etc... There is a massive difference between people waving their hands in disagreement with what you're saying right now, which happens in meetings, or people just not liking you or leaving a permanent mark from disagreement months ago, etc, which will inevitably happen if karma is used.
