For beginners!
When you click a "reply" or "quote" button or whatever, you're taken to a screen with lots of nice buttons to click, etc, which allow you to format your text. For the benefit of those who don't exactly understand how these work, or who prefer to use the quick reply box at the bottom of the page, here's a simple guide to how to do basic formatting of your post.
Instructions on proboards are similar to html in that they are given by 'tags', in brackets. The tags normally go before and after whatever it is you want to be affected by the tag, and they have square brackets - '[' and ']' - (unlike html which uses angled ones - '<' and '>').
Normally, the start tag will be a letter or word in square brackets, and the end tag will be the same thing but with a forward slash - '/' in front of the letter or word, inside the brackets. (again, this is like html). The effect applies to everything between the two tags.
Useful examples (you don't include the spaces, I've just included them so you can see it properly):
BOLD: [ b ] and [ / b ]
ITALIC: [ i ] and [ / i ]
UNDERLIGNED: [ u ] and [ / u ]
STRIKETHROUGH: [ s ] and [ / s ]
COLOUR: [ color = red ] and [ / color ] *
SIZE: [ size = 1 ] and [ / size ] **
INSERT A PICTURE: [ img ] url goes here [ / img ] ***
*Full list of colours: black, red, yellow, pink, green, orange, purple, blue, beige, brown, teal, navy, maroon, lime green
** I belive the sizes go from 1 to 7
***To use this tag, you have to actuall have the direct link to the image you want, and you put that (and nothing else!) between the tags.
e.g.To post this picture of Al Jazeera's logo, I went to their homepage, found the photo I wanted, right clicked it, and because I'm using Firefox, I selected "copy image location". If you're using Internet Explorer, right click, go to "properties", then copy and paste the URL from the bit that says "address":
Hopefully that will help people get to grips with how the forum basically works, as I know some people have expressed a bit of technophobia when it comes to this forum lark.
